Junior News

Congratulations to John Egner & Seb Segger-Staveley who represented Cumbria Schools & North Yorkshire Schools respectively in the English Schools Cross Country Championships held at at Temple Newsam on Saturday 17th March.  John finished 55th in the Junior Boys race (3rd counter for Cumbria) & Seb finished 85th in the Inter Boys (4th counter for North Yorks).  Really impressive performances from them both!
Good luck to Jack Sanderson who will be representing North Yorkshire Schools and Charlie Barry who will be running for Cumbria Schools at the Y6 and Y7 versions of the English Schools to be held in Leicestershire on Saturday 24th March.
THE NEXT KENDAL WINTER LEAGUE FIXTURE IS THIS SUNDAY (25TH MARCH) & IT WILL ALSO COUNT TOWARDS OUR JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.  The venue is HELM HILL (near Oxenholme).  It would be great to see  a good turnout of juniors for this one – nice and local this time
General KWL information can be found at http://www.helmhill.co.uk/index.php/races
Many congratulations to Seb Segger-Staveley who represented Yorkshire Under 15s in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships held at Loughborough on Saturday 10th March.  Seb finished in a fantastic 43rd place out of over 300 runners.  Yorkshire were also the winning county.  Seb (we think) is the first ever Settle Harrier to represent Yorkshire at Cross Country.
The spring & summer races will soon be upon us !
BOFRA have just announced their fixtures for 2018 and hopefully many of our juniors will be taking part in their events as in previous years.  Please note that a number of fixtures have changed weekends this year.  The list of fixtures is here  BOFRA fixtures 2018
A number of our juniors may also wish to take part in FRA Junior Championship fixtures.  There are 6 of these starting on the 25th March and finishing on the 30th June. Each fixture has races for all junior age-groups from Under 9s upwards.  The first one is on Sunday 25th March at Todd Cragg (unfortunately it clashes with the Kendal Winter League/Junior Club Championship fixture at Helm Hill – so may a difficult decision for some).  More information and fixture dates are here FRA Junior Championships
Some changes have had to be made to our Junior Club Championships fixtures as a result of the changes to some of the BOFRA fixtures.  The amended fixture list is here Settle Harriers Junior Championship Races 2018
The latest Junior Club Championship scores can be seen here Junior Championship Table 2018.  The early leaders are Jack for the boys and Lucy for the girls !

We urgently need more assistant coaches.  If any parents are interested in helping us out, please speak to any of our coaches on a Tuesday or email me at juniors@settleharriers.org

It would be great to receive race reports, photos or other contributions for this website from juniors or their parents.  It is impossible for me to report on everything going on at the moment !  All contributions welcome – again you can send them to me using the email address above. Don’t be shy !

Welcome to the Settle Harriers Juniors website !

Settle Harriers aim to provide opportunities for young runners in the area to learn about and participate in training and racing in the disciplines of cross-country and fell running. The Club is located in the centre of the finest natural scenery and training country to be found anywhere. Regular training and racing events are organised all year round open to all junior club members.

Junior training takes place on Tuesdays (term-time only) from 5.30pm – 6.45pm and our base is Eshtons Pavilion, Raines Road, Giggleswick, next to Giggleswick School’s all weather pitch.  During the winter months, sessions are held either on the all weather pitch (younger athletes) or on the fields close by.  Older juniors  may venture a bit further afield.

Our coaches are all qualified to at least UK Athletics Level 2 and we also have a large number of assistant coaches qualified to Level 1.  All these are also DBS checked.  Parents are welcome to help out at training sessions – we are always looking for volunteers.

We do require that potential new members register with us first as we operate a waiting list system due to the popularity of these training sessions.  To register your interest look at the information under the MEMBERSHIP menu. Our annual junior subscription is £10 and we also charge termly session fees which equate to £1 per session but payable at the start of each term.

Our juniors have their own junior club championship – a series of races that run from January until October.  They also compete in local leagues such as the Kendal Winter League (Jan – March) and West Yorkshire Cross-Country League (Oct – Dec).   See the RACES menu on this website for more information.
