Junior News (updated 8th September)

The first Settle Harriers Junior training session of the term will be on Tuesday 11th September.  Welcome back to all our juniors !  Registration will open a little earlier at 5.25pm to give time to process fees payments.  Announcements will be at 5.40pm and the session will then run from 5.45pm until 6.45pm.
Autumn term training fees of £14 per child are due.  We welcome payments by BACS, sort code is 20-47-61 & Account Number 33104362.  Please also quote your child’s name & send an email to Helen, our treasurer, at helengreenep@btinternet.com to let her know that you have paid by this method.  If paying by cheque, please make the cheque payable to “Settle Harriers” and bring it along on Tuesday.  Please try and avoid paying by cash if at all possible (reconciling cash payments is a time-consuming task for us!)
Once again, Giggleswick School are hosting these championships.  I expect that a number of our juniors in school years 7 to 13 will be interested in taking part so Tuesday’s session will include a “recce” run around the courses for juniors in these year-groups.  This year the courses will be close to the school, starting from Papes field & using the Ghyll Fields and quarry areas.  If your child wants to take part in the championships, they should contact their school’s PE Dept who should be co-ordinating entries.  If not, it is possible to enter your child yourself by following instructions on the race website https://www.esfrc.org/ which also has maps of all the courses and other important information.
The next race in our Junior Club Championships is on Sun 16th September – Embsay BOFRA races (1st junior race 12.00 noon) Races for all age groups from Under 9 upwards. Details are at http://bofra.org.uk/assets/racepages/embsay/embsay.php
We have always had a good turnout of juniors at this very popular local fixture.  Hope to see lots of you there again !  This the last but one fixture in our junior club championships for the year – so only 2 more chances for juniors to improve their position in the championships and make they sure they qualify for and-of-season award (for completing 3 or more races).  The current scores in the championships can be seen here scores

I hope everyone enjoyed the “relays and chips” session on the last last Tuesday of term !  35 juniors took part. I hope everyone has enjoyed training with the club over the the last school year.
The first session of next term will be on Tuesday 11th September.  However in the meantime, we have decided to run a few junior training sessions over the summer holidays to provide some continuity for our junior athletes and to assist those that will be competing in races or other events over the holiday period.
There will be just 2 training groups for these sessions – primary school age and secondary school age.  The sessions will be at the later time of 7.00pm (arrive by 6.50pm) until 8.00pm with the secondary school age juniors joining in with the senior speedwork session (session to be amended/shortened for them as appropriate).
The dates the sessions will be held are as follows ……….
Tues 24th July – secondary school-age juniors only
Tues 31st July – primary and secondary school age juniors
Tues 28th Aug – primary and secondary school age juniors
Tues 4th Sept – primary and secondary school age juniors
Eshtons Pavilion will be the meeting point for these sessions and there will be a charge of £1 per child per session payable on the evening to enable the club to cover the booking charges.
It is possible that we might need a few parent helpers to help with the younger group.  If you are available and would like to help out on any of these dates, please let Andy or Jill know and that will be much appreciated.
The next race in our Junior Club Championships is ………..
Sun 2nd September – Burnsall BOFRA races (1st junior race 12.00 noon)

Welcome to the Settle Harriers Juniors website !

Settle Harriers aim to provide opportunities for young runners in the area to learn about and participate in training and racing in the disciplines of cross-country and fell running. The Club is located in the centre of the finest natural scenery and training country to be found anywhere. Regular training and racing events are organised all year round open to all junior club members.

Junior training takes place on Tuesdays (term-time only) from 5.30pm – 6.45pm and our base is Eshtons Pavilion, Raines Road, Giggleswick, next to Giggleswick School’s all weather pitch.  During the winter months, sessions are held either on the all weather pitch (younger athletes) or on the fields close by.  Older juniors  may venture a bit further afield.

Our coaches are all qualified to at least UK Athletics Level 2 and we also have a large number of assistant coaches qualified to Level 1.  All these are also DBS checked.  Parents are welcome to help out at training sessions – we are always looking for volunteers.

We do require that potential new members register with us first as we operate a waiting list system due to the popularity of these training sessions.  To register your interest look at the information under the MEMBERSHIP menu. Our annual junior subscription is £10 and we also charge termly session fees which equate to £1 per session but payable at the start of each term.

Our juniors have their own junior club championship – a series of races that run from January until October.  They also compete in local leagues such as the Kendal Winter League (Jan – March) and West Yorkshire Cross-Country League (Oct – Dec).   See the RACES menu on this website for more information.
